Ultimately, the main problem here is that most of the stories in the back half of Season 2 have caused our main characters to become unlikable. Despite knowing most of the nitty-gritty details of the family business, Veronica is still treated as an immature child by her parents; as Hermione runs for mayor and they receive push-back regarding their plan to build a prison in Riverdale, the two of them want Veronica to be their good, obedient, little girl. But this is Veronica Lodge we are talking about, so of course she responds to that condescending order by not keeping her head down but instead charging forward and running for student council president, with Betty originally as her running mate. It seems like it will take more than push-back from fellow students and even best friends to cause Archie to realize the error of his ways, though. The only real motivator for Archie siding with Hiram over the likes of Fred and Jughead is the fear that still resides inside of him after his father was shot by the Black Hood.

As Hiram's plan for Riverdale starts to take action, everyone has to pick a side. This is exhausting. Archie and Jughead are at odds. Betty and Veronica are at odds. The Lodges and Andrews are at odds.

With just under less than a month until the second season concludes, the series has all its leads in direct conflict with each other. Alas, poor Kevin is again relegated to the sidelines, given nothing more to do tonight than moon over inexplicable guest star Andy Cohen, film the action of other characters on his cell phone, and, worst of all, bringing his online flirtation with Creepy Chic into the real world. Bughead lovers have much to rejoice about because those characters have the moral high ground here. Still, we finally get a glimpse into why Jughead cares so much about the Serpents, Southside High, et. But at least we know the ideology behind his constant rebellion. As always, Archie motives are less clear. It would be nice to think that such moments indicate a rich inner life for the character, with our ginger hero possessing the kind of multitudes that would make Whitman smile.
