The Obon Festival concluded with the traditional lantern lighting ceremony in the frog pond in Como Park. WILLMAR — The two major candidates for governor faced off at a debate at a technical college here Tuesday, each trying to prove that he would be a champion of greater Minnesota communities that have long felt ignored by state government. Tim Walz and Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson, greater Minnesota will get one of their own to lead state government for the next four years. Walz, a Democratic congressman from Mankato, has represented the First Congressional District, which cuts across the length of southern Minnesota from Wisconsin to South Dakota. Johnson, a Republican, is a native of Detroit Lakes, a farming community and resort spot east of Fargo. That means we need to work together for a world-class education, access to affordable health care and to build a healthy transportation system.

Tim Walz and Jeff Johnson are both promising Minnesotans better-quality health care for less cost. That leaves voters to choose which philosophy — Republican or Democrat — they most agree with, but with no clear evidence that either candidate will bring sweeping change to the system. The problem, experts say, is that there are no easy solutions to the myriad challenges facing the U. Most broad changes leave somebody or some group — taxpayers, doctors, hospitals or insurers — coming out winners, while others come out losers, financially speaking. What it does mean is both proposals, if implemented, will likely have consequences beyond their intentions. The argument: Walz wants to open up state-run MinnesotaCare, coverage currently limited to the working poor, to anyone who buys insurance on the individual market.

But we do have very, very diverse views about the future of Minnesota and the future of Minnesotans. I believe that Minnesotans and Minnesota businesses are overtaxed. And Tim Walz believes we are undertaxed. I believe that you should have more control over your health care and more choices and more options in your health insurance. And Tim has said we need to move to a single-payer system where everyone loses their insurance and we are all forced onto one government plan. Tim disagrees with that. That is not the right direction for Minnesota.

The Obon Festival concluded with the traditional lantern lighting ceremony in the frog pond in Como Park. But whoever wins the race between Democrat Tim Walz and Republican Jeff Johnson is also likely to face tough decisions over a set of contentious social issues. The next governor will play a role in helping shape the public debate — and in some cases the public policy — of polarizing issues like abortion, guns and immigration. What exactly happens will also depend on which party controls the state House and Senate next year, but the governor often sets the tone of the debate, and will sign or veto bills with the stroke of a pen. Interest groups on both sides are spending heavily and mobilizing volunteers to back Johnson, a Hennepin County commissioner, or Walz, a U. The confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was widely seen as a victory for abortion foes nationwide who want to see the court overturn Roe v.
