I have been afforded numerous opportunities many of my students never have been, and possibly never will be, afforded. I am the picture of privilege. Therefore, when I was presented with the opportunity to creatively approach diversity and inclusion via a health disparities course, I saw this as an amazing, if not somewhat frightening, opportunity. The result has been both humbling and empowering for me personally.

Diversity can be discussed in many ways. Instructors are encouraged to promote discussion of diversity in classes, as well as utilize current events and campus issues to address diversity. This is a good exercise to talk about stereotypes, where stereotypes come from and why they still exist.

I make it a priority at the beginning of each year to make sure my students know they are valuable, just as they are. This is important for all students, but I feel it is especially important to my students as I teach inclusion and have a wide variety of ability levels. I want my students to recognize we all have different strengths and weaknesses, but this fact does not decrease our value as people. One of the most important activities I do all year comes during the first week of school. I love it and I do it every year because it does a great job of making the point that we can not judge how smart someone is by a score on a test, because that simply does not tell the whole story. For this activity I split my students into about six groups, then I give them a box of material and let them know the directions and supplies are all the same. Activities for Building Cultural Competencies in Our Students and Ourselves

To help participants think about the concept of lookism bias based on appearance. Consciously or not, we often make judgments about people based on the way they look. After the small groups have worked on the activity for about 25 minutes, bring the groups together and have them present their findings. Discuss what is fair and legitimate to ask of people about physical characteristics and appearance as it pertains to GVSU standards. To help participants recognize the differences between people, as well as the many similarities people share. Two volunteers come forward and stand with their backs together.
