In late May of , an album of music with some stunningly beautiful songs was issued by a group named Crosby, Stills and Nash. The three musicians, shown below — David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Stephen Stills — had each played previously with other groups. Crosby, with the Byrds, played guitar, sang and wrote songs; Stills, a guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist and songwriter with Buffalo Springfield; and Nash, a guitarist, singer and songwriter with The Hollies — all groups that had made hit songs and albums. But around these three singer-songwriter-musicians came together to form a new group to make new music. And what good music it was — fashioning a distinctive and beautiful sound, along with a social statement or two here and there.

Its gorgeous, emotional break combines an out-on-the-highway slide guitar folded magically in with surf guitar. We longed for accessible tunes from Patti Smith. The intro casually noodles, then fires up into an ardent gallop that supports and then is overshadowed by the lead guitar riff. One of the most influential Rock tracks — arguably the first Psychedelic Rock song. It certainly was the first psychedelic hit.
It was written and composed in in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , on a boat named the Mayan , owned by Crosby, who composed the music, while Kantner and Stills wrote most of the lyrics. Crosby said, "Paul called me up and said that he was having this major duke-out with this horrible guy who was managing the band, and he was freezing everything their names were on. So we didn't put Paul's name on it for a while. In later versions, we made it very certain that he wrote it with us. Of course, we evened things up with him with a whole mess of cash when the record went huge. The song was also released by Kantner's band Jefferson Airplane in November on the album Volunteers.
