This is a lesson for 3rd grade math about the concept of a fraction. A fraction in which numerator is less than denominator is called proper fraction, means a fraction that is less than 1. A fraction in which numerator is greator than or equal to denominator is called proper fraction, means a fraction that is greator than or equal to 1. The whole number is the quotient which is 1. The numerator of the mixed number is the remainder which is 1. The denominator remains to be 3. The whole number is the quotient which is 2.
What would happen if we did not have shapes such as circles and rectangles to refer to? Look at example 4 below. The numerator and the denominator of a fraction must be multiplied by the same nonzero whole number in order to have equivalent fractions. You may be wondering why this is so. In the last lesson, we learned that a fraction that has the same numerator and denominator is equal to one. This is shown below.
