Please note, this event has expired. Based on the beloved Academy Award winning Disney film, this nine-time Tony nominated musical continues to win the hearts of people all over the globe. Trapped in her provincial town life, an intelligent, young beauty risks everything to become the heroine of her own story and break a wicked spell imprisoning a castle full of enchanting misfits and a terrifying beast. When the Disney film was adapted for Broadway in , composer Alan Menken nearly doubled the number of songs, and the additions that he wrote with lyricist Tim Rice are every bit as stunning as the originals with lyrics by the late Howard Ashman. Further, Linda Woolverton 's book for the musical lends depth to characters previously left underdeveloped in her film screenplay, especially the Beast and his household. Drury Lane Theatre's new production honors both the film and Broadway versions, but director Alan Souza and his creative team deliver a refreshingly original vision, giving the talented cast space to breathe new life into familiar characters. The result is a beautifully designed, thoughtfully staged, and strongly acted fairy tale that should delight audiences of all ages. The standout performances from this ensemble are nearly too many to mention, but I'll begin with the inhabitants of Belle's poor provincial town in France. Erica Stephan makes a sympathetic Belle, and her father-daughter bond with eccentric inventor Maurice Mark David Kaplan is not only sweet, but also establishes the emotional stakes for the sacrifices she later makes for him.

The production of “Disney's Beauty and the Beast” on Drury Lane's stage is exactly what we discussed. The music is still that of Alan Menken.

Hence a hit animated musical feature, with songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, about a bookish young woman who saves an enchanted prince by falling in love with him, has become an array of action figures, a line of clothing and costumes, countless fashion accessories, a live version for Broadway with additional songs by Menken and Tim Rice , a "junior" version for high school and middle school productions, a live-action movie starring Harry Potter alum Emma Watson, and so on. The current revival of the Broadway version at Drury Lane Theatre, directed by Alan Souza, tries mightily to transcend mere repetition of the familiar Disney schtick while also aiming to please audiences eager for more of the same old, same old. The result is a show that won't fully satisfy anyone.

BWW Review: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at Drury Lane Theatre

Man and woman meet. Man and woman fall in love. Man and woman live happily ever after. What could be more classic than that kind of love story? Cast under a spell, a prince is destined to be a beast for the rest of his life unless he can learn to love and for someone to love him back. Enter Belle. When her father is locked up for trespassing in the castle, she offers to take his place instead.

Why, again? A different cast, different director, set, stage. Yes, for the most part the script is the same, the score with some modifications, at times but even the responsiveness of the audience can change the production. At least for that night. The music is still that of Alan Menken, the lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice and the book by Linda Woolverton, but this production, sharply directed by Alan Souza and superbly choreographed by Ron De Jesus is as close to perfection as one can get in a live performance. There are no cuts and splices as with film, so these two creative minds have to trust their cast to make the story come to the audience as they planned. It is up to the cast, and in this case, they were flawless.

These are at the heart of "Disney's Beauty and the Beast," the rousing and relevant "tale as old as time" musical currently commanding the stage at Oakbrook Terrace's Drury Lane Theatre under the direction of Alan Souza. Belle aptly sung and acted by Glen Ellyn native Erica Stephan longs to break free of her "provincial life" while her eccentric inventor father Maurice the charming Mark David Caplan wishes to give her the life she imagines from the books she's always reading. Belle and Maurice are well-aware that the townspeople find them odd.
