The Texas Clipper is a multilevel dive, meaning experienced, open-water certified divers can explore the A deck and the Promenade at 62 to 80 feet. Penetration divers, experienced with overhead environments, can tackle interior spaces to depths from 70 feet to over feet. Meanwhile, because much of the wreck is more than 60 feet above the bottom it may be explored by entry level divers. We recommend entry level divers consider professionally guided dives. The Texas Clipper can be compared to a large museum , requiring scuba divers to make several trips to fully appreciate it because of the size. The ships were loaded with precious metals and similar cargo.

A barrier island so far down the Gulf Coast of Texas that it almost straddles to the border with Mexico, South Padre Island shares the warm, clear seas of Mexican dive sites while still being in the United States. South Padre Island's waters include one of the largest artificial reef-wrecks in U. Little Sara's bottom is at feet, while Seana's Rig is at feet, but both have intact, coral-encrusted superstructures in somewhat shallower water. Both sites teem with small and medium-sized tropical fish. Los Torres is another decommissioned oil rig, albeit in this case the rig is a technical dive. The rig's support towers rest on a foot deep bottom, topping out at 90 feet.
We took our small granddaughters ages for their first visit. When we were trying to help each one get started, the dive master was awesome! He swam with the two oldest girls and gave them some pointers to help build their confidence. I know My family and I decided to try the snorkeling trip. So glad we did! We had a blast snorkeling with all the fish.
Jump to navigation. The Padre Island Underwater Park, which is sometimes simply referred to as "The Artificial Reef," is part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's innovative program, Rigs to Reefs, which transforms run out oil rigs into habitats for marine life. Grab your favorite dive partner, because the Lone Star State offers some exceptional diving and this is one of the best dive sites in Texas. If you've never met a scorpionfish, be sure you check your Fish ID before you go. These fish are wonderfully efficient at camouflaging themselves, hiding on reefs and wrecks in abundance, and they remain true to form here.
