Actress, Comedienne. She gained wide fame in the mids as an original cast member of television's hit comedy series, "Saturday Night Live" SNL. Born Gilda Susan Radner in Detroit, Michigan, to Henrietta Dworkin Radner, a legal secretary, and Herman Radner, a businessman who operated Detroit's Seville Hotel, where many nightclub performers and actors stayed when performing in the city. Radner attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, dropping out in her senior year to follow her Canadian boyfriend, Jeff Rubinoff, to Toronto, Canada, where he intended to become a sculptor. It was in Toronto that she made her professional acting debut in the production of Godspell. Shortly afterwards, Radner joined the Toronto Second City comedy troupe.

In her routines, Radner specialized in parodies of television stereotypes, such as advice specialists and news anchors, and in , she won an Emmy Award for her performances on the show. She also portrayed those characters in her highly successful one-woman show on Broadway in Radner's SNL work established her as an iconic figure in the history of American comedy. She died from ovarian cancer in Her autobiography dealt frankly with her life, work, and personal struggles, including those with the illness. Her widower, Gene Wilder , carried out her personal wish that information about her illness would help other cancer victims, founding and inspiring organizations that emphasize early diagnosis, hereditary factors and support for cancer victims.

The reality was no one, not Wilder, not Radner, not the doctors who misdiagnosed her, the doctors who treated her kindly and unkindly knew enough to help her. Wilder was, even in recent years, frequently recognised by tots passing him by on the street. How could he not be with his striking corn-flower blue eyes that were a little wild, his electro-frizzy hair, his somewhat sad, worried face? Just what he always did, what he made a life, a career out of doing: tucking away his own grief, his own world of sadness, so that he could focus on making people laugh. Radner was a comedian who not unlike Wilder, not unlike the late Robin Williams had intense internal struggles and deep grief that informed her talent for making people laugh; for making them happy.
