Diversity and Inclusion Science. Social and Emotional Development. At the T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics, our faculty and programs focus on the most important challenges of the 21st century — namely, the well-being of children, youth, families, and their communities across the lifespan. We build on our rich heritage and focus our diverse resources on cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative action, and translation of this to have impact. This presents many interesting, new and exciting opportunities and challenges for our faculty, staff, and students.
A dolescents, S chools, P eers, and I nterpersonal R elationships. The aim of the ASPIRE study is to identify the affective and neurocognitive characteristics of adolescent social relationships that impact academic success and wellbeing. We assess the impact of family, peer, and romantic relationships on academic engagement. This is important because social relationships can help teens navigate the path to school and career success, but they can also pose challenges, and at times, hinder engagement in school. We partnered with two local high schools and collected data from 99 dating adolescent couples. These adolescent couples participated in a laboratory study at Arizona State University that included observations of conflict discussions, survey assessments, dual-acquisition EEG while playing an interactive computer game, and salivary stress physiology assessments.
The Center is located in the Phoenix metropolitan area, a vibrant, rapidly growing urban community of the American Southwest.
