He is captain of the San Francisco Police Department SFPD 's homicide detail, and a longtime and long-suffering friend of Adrian Monk from their days on the force together where Stottlemeyer served as Monk's fourth partner and later as watch commander. Stottlemeyer's second-in-command, Lieutenant Randy Disher , is a source of much comedic strife. Stottlemeyer, like many of the characters in the show, can be viewed as a parallel to Detective Monk's Sherlock Holmes character in this case, Inspector Lestrade. Not much is known of Stottlemeyer's life before he joined the SFPD, though in an interview, Ted Levine stated it was his own belief that Stottlemeyer had served in the military and was later discharged, lived on the east coast, then moved to California as a young man, joining the police force. In " Mr. Monk and the Class Reunion ", it is implied that he has lived in the Bay Area since at least the s, as when he is trying to get information from reunion guests about a homicide investigation, he is booed off the stage when the projectionist displays some embarrassing pictures of him wearing riot gear and violently attacking protesters at an anti-nuclear warfare demonstration at UC Berkeley Monk and Natalie are mortified, while Stottlemeyer insists that the protestors' permit had expired. As she is talking to the owner, you see the gate behind her open and then closed between shots. She had latched it, so all scenes should have shown it latched. When the Captain's wife falls victim to an apparent union dispute gone awry, it's up to Monk to find out what really happened and bring Stottlemeyer back from the brink. Former police detective Adrian Monk, whose photographic memory and amazing ability to piece together tiny clues made him a local legend, has suffered from intensified obsessive-compulsive disorder and a variety of phobias since the unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, in Stottlemeyer, who wavered between admiration for Monk and annoyance at his eccentricities during the first season, is becoming more of a friend to Monk as the series develops, frequently calling him in to help, as much for Monk's benefit as for his own. However, he knows Monk's limitations as well as his strengths and may still harbor doubts about the wisdom of allowing Monk to carry a gun or subdue a perpetrator. Stottlemeyer's second-in-command, Lieutenant Randall Disher, also seems to be developing both admiration and compassion for the man he once labeled "the defective detective". Despite flaws and inadequacies all around, the three are becoming an increasingly effective team, with additional help from Monk's personal assistant.
