That was my daughter Emily on Facebook on learning of the death of Tim Conway at the age of She was coming from the standpoint of one who had worked with Conway and observed him five times during her labors for the teams that created Time-Life's DVD boxed collections of TV history notably, in this case, the big, acclaimed and popular boxed set of the Carol Burnett Show. I have to say something else about the importance of Conway's death: it officially marks the end of one of my favorite TV traditions -- sketch comedy actors doing everything possible to crack up fellow performers and make them "break character" in a blubber of yowls, titters, howls, guffaws and collapses to the floor. No one since TV was created was ever better at making his colleagues break character and laugh at his animadversions during a written sketch. Conway was king at that. Red Skelton did it all the time -- deliberately. He was a supremely gifted clown.

From to he appeared in more than 20 TV shows, TV series and films, portraying different characters in each. Twice, in and in —81, he had his own TV series. Conway was admired for his ability to depart from scripts with humorous ad libs and gestures, which frequently caused others in the skit to break character while attempting to control their surprise and laughter. Conway was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus in and had brain surgery, but his health continued to deteriorate and he died on May 14, from complications of that condition. His legal name was Thomas in childhood sources differ as to whether he was legally born Thomas or Toma, the Romanian language analog; if it was the latter, it was legally changed to Thomas during his childhood 1 and was typically known as Tom; he changed his stage name to Tim near the beginning of his acting career quipping that he " dotted the O " to avoid confusion with actor Tom Conway.

But even as we mourn his loss, it's impossible not to reflect back on the ways he made everybody laugh, including audiences and his fellow comedians. I cherish the times we had together both on the screen and off. He'll be in my heart forever. Burnett wasn't the only one mourning the loss of Conway. So sad to hear of the passing of TimConway at

For eleven television seasons, viewers tuned into the hit variety series The Carol Burnett Show if for no other reason than to watch Tim Conway "torment" his fellow cast members, especially Harvey Korman. With a graceful slapstick touch, impeccable comedic timing and a quick improvisational wit, Conway always seemed to find a way to make Korman, Burnett and every other unfortunate soul in the sketch collapse in spasms of belly laughs. Tim played a bumbling dentist fresh out of dental school and co-star Harvey Korman played Tim's very first patient. In the skit, Harvey has come.
