According to the Hall's official website , "The inductees are chosen by a secret ballot of over individual voters consisting of all past inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, musicians, historians, critics and members of the music industry. So who knows, maybe it was your mouse click that finally got them into the Hall of Fame. Two years ago, the group seemed less than concerned about repeatedly failing to be elected into the organization, suggesting they could " just buy it and fire everybody. Gene Simmons also courted controversy by saying he wouldn't want to perform with original Kiss members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss if the group were inducted this year. Gabriel was already inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis back in Since leaving that group in , he's remained one of the most innovative and literate artists in rock music, as well as being one of the first to incorporate world music influences into his compositions.
But one star who won't be in attendance is Ronstadt herself. As Ronstadt recently told Billboard , her struggle with Parkinson's disease has made it difficult to leave home. I have to save traveling for things I really have to do. I have to spend a certain amount of time visiting my family, and I have to spend a little bit of time doing things that are professional. But I just can't travel casually. But even without health concerns keeping her away, it sounds as though Ronstadt might not have gone to the ceremony.
An all-star group gathered on Thursday night to pay tribute to the ailing Linda Ronstadt , whose battle with Parkinson's disease kept the singing legend from her own Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac , Sheryl Crow , Emmylou Harris , Bonnie Raitt and Carrie Underwood performed in her place, helping to frame the legacy of a nowyear-old star who had already won Grammy, Emmy, Golden Globe and Tony awards over a career that's spanned more than 30 albums. Both were given new life via Ronstadt's '70s-era country-rock interpretations. Underwood stepped forward for 'Different Drum,' the Mike Nesmith -composed title track to a Ronstadt album. All five sang harmony. So she was rockin', and she hung out with the rockers, the rock bands. But she still had that little bit of country that went along with her.

One tricky aspect of her relation to the Hall of Fame is that Ronstadt b. July 15, has long since gone beyond rock in her madly diverse musical career. The night was ripe for drama: Kiss' founding lineup were taking the stage together; Courtney Love and Dave Grohl were standing inches apart. But last night's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Brooklyn's Barclays Center was full of surprising hugs, landmark onstage collaborations and superfans in full face makeup. After the final strains of Nirvana's "All Apologies" faded into the night, these were the event's most memorable moments. When Chris Martin took the stage after Gabriel and his band's opening performance of "Digging in the Dirt," he relayed to the crowd some of his mother's advice: When you're nervous, always look for a passage from the Bible. When he moved on to the proper speech, the Coldplay singer recalled a day he spent in Paris with only Gabriel's music to keep him company and even nodded to the new inductee's dancing, claiming that Gabriel pioneered "the school of English Unchoreographed," a style that singers like he and Thom Yorke still practice. Some members of the Kiss Army were dubious about the choice of Tom Morello to induct the band: Unlike Kiss, he was rock-establishment-approved — hell, he's even touring with the E Street Band. But in a speech that was as impassioned as it was hilarious, Morello made a powerful and personal case for the band he worshipped as a kid.
Artists are eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first album or single. They have to figure it out. Most of all, thank you to all of the fans that have supported rock and roll throughout the years, and to Kurt and Krist, without whom I would not be here today. Thank you most of all to Kurt Cobain. They also did extremely well in the public vote.
